Post-treatment Care
Immediately after any injectable treatment there may be slight redness, swelling, tenderness and an itching sensation to the treated area. This is quite a normal response to the injection and usually disappears within a few days. Applying ice to treated areas will reduce swelling. If problems persist, please contact your treating physician.
Initial swelling after a lip treatment may last longer. This will be temporary and should be treated according to practitioners’ specifications. If problems persist always consult your treating practitioner.
Recommended guidelines:
- Drink water regularly throughout the day, approximately 8 glasses of water are recommended daily.
- Avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours after the treatment. It is best if you are able to:
- keep treated areas free of cosmetics;
- avoid using moisturisers;
- avoid using active products containing AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids/Glycolics), BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids), or Retinoid Gels or Creams.
- After 24 hours the area may be gently washed with soap and water, and light water based make-up can be applied.
- Until the initial swelling and redness have subsided, do not expose the treated area to intense heat, for example solarium and sunbathing, or extreme cold.
- Avoid drinking alcohol as it opens up the blood vessels and may increase bruising or swelling.
- If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores.
- If you are using aspirin or any similar medication, be aware that these may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
- Do not have facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, Liquid Nitrogen (dry ice) or Laser treatments for 10-14 days after the injection with the dermal filler.
- Laser resurfacing is best done after the dermal filler has disappeared from the skin.
How long will a treatment last?
Dermal fillers are long lasting but not permanent. By choosing a non-permanent dermal filler you can continue or change the combination of treatments - and the procedure can be repeated as often as you like.
Most patients choose to have a follow-up treatment 6 - 12 months after an initial treatment.
Results from wrinkle injections usually last up to six months; in some instances longer. Continued use, ensures greater durability, as muscles have ‘unlearned’ the frowning or squinting response that originally contributed to the development of the lines.
Laser resurfacing and IPL offer long-term results, but the number of sessions required and duration of results depend on the individual’s skin condition.
