5 Minutes with Dr George Calfas - Volumetrics

Dr Calfas, one of Sydney’s renowned cosmetic and laser physicians and surgeons, has been helping Australians put their ‘best self’ forward for over 25 years. With no two days alike, Dr Calfas enjoys the challenge of keeping abreast of the new developments and technologies in this rapidly evolving field.
This week, Dr Calfas sheds light on the phemomenon of Volumetrics.
1. What is Volumetrics?
Aging introduces a number of changes to the body, most of all being the loss of volume. You start to notice a loss of fullness in the facial features. As early as your twenties you can start to notice these changes. Once you begin to lose volume, your skin loses support and elasticity, and tissues start to sag and you’ll start to notice a few extra lines, wrinkles and depletion in facial volume.
Volumetrics is the latest cosmetic enhancement technique. The first principle of volumetrics is to restore a youthful appearance. Volumetrics restores volume in those areas that have lost the fatty deposits, such as the cheeks, around the eyes, and particularly the mid-face. By restoring volume to these areas, the face can retain a youthful, natural look. Volumetrics is about restoring a natural, youthful look rather than changing your look.
2. Why Volumetrics rather than a facelift?
A facelift is limited to situations where there is a loss of skin elasticity and where that excess skin needs to be removed; these areas include the jowl, neck etc. A facelift however, can’t correct cheeks or the mid-face, eyes, lips or chin; areas where we tend to lose volume support.
A facelift is relatively effective for some ‘jowling’ but it’s best to use an extensively studied hyaluronic acid dermal filler, rather than cutting away loose skin. Volumetrics allows a truly tailored approach to each individual’s facial structure.
As you continue to age, your face will continue to change, therefore Volumetrics is an ideal way to continue non-permanently contouring the face while retaining flexibility and control over your looks.
What effect can be expected from Volumetrics?
Volumetrics restores volume, shape and support to the full appearance. Not only does it add volume, but it takes up the ‘slack’ of the jowly skin, while improving the texture and softening lines and creases.
The mid-section of the face, such as the eyes, cheeks and lips, volume can be improve ones’ appearance. Volumetrics can plump out these lines, and make smoker’s lines virtually disappear, likewise around the eyes and the cheek areas. If you increase the volume, you create a lift. Volumetrics is a subtle and produces a natural looking result; ensuring you maintain your own natural beauty.
3. Is Volumetrics suitable for anyone?
Yes! Younger people with hereditary problems such as thin lips, hollows under their eyes, or flat cheek mounds can benefit with an increase to their facial volume.
And of course, for older people adding volume can restore a more youthful look. Again, it’s very subtle, and by using this technique, Volumetrics can reduce the number of lines and creases on the face as well as restoring some of that fullness to the face.
4. What kind of down time would be normal?
There’s not much down time – if any at all. You could reasonably expect to return to work the next day. Very occasionally there can be a small amount of bruising, particularly around the eye area.
5. Are there any side effects?
Some mild swelling and bruising. As hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our body, it has been tested and proved safe in over 10 million treatments worldwide.
6. Would Volumetrics be suitable for men?
Absolutely, especially younger men who work out a lot and have a very lean physique. These men tend lose fat from their faces, so can often look a little gaunt. With Volumetrics men can have the well defined body and a younger, less gaunt look. Men are becoming more and more aware of the cosmetic medicine options open to them; particularly because there is little if any down time, and their mates won’t notice a thing.
7. How long does it last and what does it cost?
It depends on the area treated, the depth of the injection and also the technique as to how long it will last however you should expect from 6 – 12 months.
Costs vary depending on how much product is used – but starts from $440.
