5 Minutes with Dr George Calfas - Non-surgical Nose Jobs

Dr Calfas, one of Sydney’s renowned cosmetic and laser physicians and surgeons, has been helping Australians put their ‘best self’ forward for over 25 years. With no two days alike, Dr Calfas enjoys the challenge of keeping abreast of the new developments and technologies in this rapidly evolving field.
This week, Dr Calfas sheds light on the non-surgical nose job.
1. We all know about surgical rhinoplasty, or commonly referred to as the ‘nose job’, but what is the ‘non-surgical nose job’?
Non-surgical rhinoplasty or the ‘non-surgical nose job’ replaces the scalpel with a needle, using a hyaluronic acid dermal filler to soften, shape and even straighten an individual’s nose without resorting to invasive surgery.
Not many people are aware that the majority of bumps on the nose are easily treatable by simply adding a touch of a hyaluronic acid dermal filler to the nose – slightly building up the indentation or smoothing out any bumps.
2. Why does the nose have such an impact on our facial attractiveness?
The nose is a central focal point of the face, to which our eyes are naturally drawn. An outstanding feature for all to see, the nose has a definite impact upon our self-image and self- consciousness. Furthermore, facial attractiveness is a result of facial harmony. If the shape and size of our nose is disproportionate to the rest of our face, then the relative attractiveness of our face is affected.
3. Which noses can benefit from a non-surgical nose job?
The vast majority of nose irregularities are treatable by a using a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. However, Asian noses in particular, or noses that have a deficient bridge and require building up, can easily be built with fillers, eliminating the flatness of the nose and providing more shape – without resorting to surgery or nasal implants.
4. What effects can be achieved?

Bumps and irregularities of shape occur not only up and down the length of the nose, but also from side to side. If one side of the nose is more indented than another, this can impact upon the symmetry, and therefore the attractiveness of the nose.
The way in which you can correct these bumps and indentations is by filling them in with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, either making it more even or levelling out the contour. This will make the nose look straighter from both the front and the side.
You can also reduce the appearance of the nose, with a non-surgical nose job. If the junction at the top of the nose, where it meets the forehead, is a deep concavity, this makes the nose look like it is jutting out, creating a steeper angle which ultimately makes it appear more prominent. By adding a small amount of a hyaluronic acid dermal filler in this gap the concavity is softened thereby reducing the angle of the nose.
So in fact, by adding to the nose you are able to make it appear to be smaller. It’s amazing to see the immediate effect and patients themselves are amazed at the difference a simple filler can make.
5. How would you describe the ideal nose?
There’s no such thing. An ideal nose is dependent on the shape and size of the face. It has to be in harmony with the forehead, eyes and
cheeks. What might look good on one person could look ridiculous on someone else. Therefore each nose must be assessed on a face-by-face basis.
6. What down-time is involved?
No down-time at all. This is a true lunch-time procedure which takes approximately 10 minutes, and what’s more, you can go straight back to work.
7. How long does it last and how much does it cost?
I like to use a reversible product so that the patient can see the end result, and if all goes well, they can continue to put in the product once a year or opt for a similar but longer-lasting product.
Prices range from $440 - $700. This is a very cost effective procedure which is simple and very safe.
8. Are there any side-effects?
There will be minimal swelling and in very few cases a slight bruising.
9. Is there a time when surgery is a preferred option?
In cases where the nose is in fact quite large and needs to be reduced or if the tip of the nose is quite bulbous it needs to be reduced – then surgery will produce better results. Also, if there is an impediment to the breathing following a broken nose this would need to be corrected surgically.
