5 Minutes with Dr George Calfas - Cheeks

Dr Calfas, one of Sydney’s renowned cosmetic and laser physicians and surgeons, has been helping Australians put their ‘best self’ forward for over 25 years. With no two days ever alike, Dr Calfas enjoys the challenge of keeping abreast of the new developments and technologies in this rapidly evolving field.

Dr Calfas is back this month to lift the lid on how to achieve great cheeks.

1. Plump, high cheeks are a desire on many people’s ‘wish-list’. Why?

High, full cheeks are a glamorous feature of the face, that’s why they are a key focus of many women’s make-up regime and are such a coveted facial trait. However, our cheeks are also a giveaway feature of our true age. As we age, we lose volume and support in our faces and the cheeks are one of the first areas to start sagging. If you are able to reduce the sagging in the face by volumising the cheek area, you can go a long way in rejuvenating the face and restore a youthful appearance.

Cheeks are also instrumental for our facial expressions. When you slightly smile, you’ll notice how the cheeks rise and how much happier we appear. By augmenting and lifting the cheeks, you create fullness, and this helps give people a ‘cheery’ look, even when you’re not really smiling, which is much more appealing and attractive.

2. Are great cheeks only reserved for lucky people with great DNA, or are there ways to help those who are less endowed?

We are what we inherit, so our genes do indeed play a large role in the shape of our face and some people are blessed with those ‘chiselled’ cheek bones like Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn. However, for those not so fortunate, there are simple procedures and treatments available to help create enviable cheeks.

3. How can people achieve those ‘chiselled’ cheek bones?

You can enhance the cheek area by improving the loss of volume and loss of support.

To achieve fullness, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are used to fill the area over the cheek bone. For natural full cheeks, like J-Lo, the cheek mounds should sweep back under the eye toward the ear.
To ensure you achieve a natural look, each person must be assessed on a face-by-face basis by a trained and qualified medical practitioner. This is a simple and quick 30 minute procedure with surprisingly little down time.

Proper technique is integral with any cheek enhancement, so it is important that you visit a fully-qualified doctor who you are confident with.

4. We all know about trout pouts, but can cheeks ever be ‘over done’?

They can, and these are known as ‘clown cheeks’. Clown cheeks can occur if a physician fails to take into consideration a person’s tear troughs, nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines) and cheeks, before injecting.

Most people are unaware of how the effects of fuller cheeks can in fact create facial harmony and improve the areas in which they wish to correct. Sagging in the cheek area can also result in sunken tear troughs and increase the nasolabial folds (nose to mouth creases). By enhancing the cheeks with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler you will consequently see a dramatic improvement in all these areas – creating a youthful appearance.

5. When do you start to lose volume in the cheek area?

People will begin to lose volume from their faces from the mid to late 20s, and unfortunately it will disappear faster and faster as we age.

6. Any top tips for keeping youthful, plump cheeks?

People can actually do at a lot at home, and the earlier you get started the better. As soon as you begin to notice fine, crinkly lines – or some hollowing under the eyes you should begin to seek products which have active ingredients such as retinoids or retinols to help to stave off the hands of time.

However, paramount to protecting your skin is UV protection. Avoid direct sun exposure for long-periods, and slip, slop, slap.
