Fact and Fiction About IPL Hair Removal

IPL / laser hair removal is the easiest and most effective way to get rid of all the unwanted hair on the body however, even after 7 years on the market, there are many myths and misconceptions about it.

In this article we approach most of the myths and facts about IPL / laser hair removal.

Fact: It is recommended not to tan before treatments.

Tanning and IPL / laser hair removal are not compatible. Tanning before or after treatments could cause hyper or hypo pigmentation. Also, tanning prior to the procedure will require lowing settings, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. Avoiding sun exposure or tanning beds 4 to 6 weeks prior to treatments is highly recommended.

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is not effective

Contrary to the statements of those unfamiliar with this technology, IPL / laser hair removal is very effective when properly performed for the majority of candidates. Non-responders are usually limited to people with white, gray, blond or red hair or people with hormonal problems.

Fact: Training is important. A technician with experience is crucial in selecting the proper IPL / laser setting for each skin type.

A technician with no experience could select settings that are too low and make the treatment less effective, or they could choose settings that are too high and could cause side effects.

Myth: IPL / Laser hair removal is not safe

IPL / laser hair removal uses technology that targets the pigment in the hair leaving the skin and surrounding tissue unharmed. Studies have shown that there are no long term adverse affects of the procedure.

Fact: People with dark skin can get results

The darker the skin colour, the more difficult it is to obtain results from IPL / laser hair removal. This does not mean that people with dark skin can't get good results. With recent advances in the science of IPL / laser hair removal, equipment has been developed to deal with the more challenging removal of hair from dark skin without harm or discomfort. Dark skinned people require more treatments than the average (4 to 6 sessions). People with dark skin can have safe and effective treatments but they need to make sure they choose a medical spa with the right technology for their skin type.

Myth: Light hair is not treatable

People who have blond, red, gray or white need to be treated by a machine with advanced setting capability and by a practitioner well trained in ‘variables’ of IPL treatments. This technology is attracted to the pigment in the hair. There is less pigment in blond, red, white or gray hair so guaranteeing an effective treatment is more difficult. People with dark blond or light brown hair may obtain a reduction but it will take more than the average number treatments (4 to 6 sessions). We suggest trial treatments when the customer comes in for waxing and that way the IPL technician is able to see if the customer’s hair will respond without risk to the customer’s pocket!

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is very painful

Many clients describe the sensation as a slight tingling or stinging sensation. It is an uncomfortable but not a painful feeling. The client should expect to feel a mild rubber band pop or a mild pinch. Those who have experienced the three main commercial methods of hair removal describe waxing and electrolysis as much more painful than IPL / laser hair removal.

Fact: It is impossible to guarantee results

It is impossible to predict the exact result a client will achieve with IPL / laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require. The results will depend on skin colour and the thickness and colour of the hair.

Following pre-care instructions is also very important.
